| What is POP.STOP?
Population research organizations recently announced that, after years of declining birth rates, America's population growth rates are skyrocketing once again. Rapid population growth leads to environmental degradation, overuse of resources and a decline in overall quality of life. To avoid those long-term and serious problems, POP.STOP educates the public about these important issues through advocacy of legislative and personal solutions, as well as media advertising to suggest smaller family size and lower immigration levels.
POP.STOP is a 501(c)(4) organization dedicated to the principles that the American population is already too large and our national population level should be reduced by education and other non-coercive means.
POP.STOP has two major focuses: population policy and immigration. These policy areas are interrelated, since immigration is the largest component of American population growth. Population policy, however, focuses on individual and governmental decisions about family size, the environment, and resource utilization. Immigration policy, on the other hand, is largely determined by the federal government, so POP.STOP immigration-related activities are focused on federal immigration legislation and policy.
POP.STOP believes that much of the "demographic momentum" which drives population increases comes from individual decisions about the number of children to have. In an attempt to convince prospective families to have fewer children, POP.STOP educates the public about the effects of population growth on the United States.
POP.STOP believes that, although most "demographic momentum" comes from individuals, government policies can influence the number of children a family may have, and thus influence American population size and growth. As an advocacy organization, POP.STOP lobbies on governmental programs which either help reduce population growth, or ignore or foster increased population growth.
POP.STOP believes that modern media can influence families' decisions to have more children in the same way they influence other family decisions. While recent media efforts to encourage responsible fatherhood, for example, are important, they may boost the actual number of births unless they are coupled with a message about population's effect on our environment and quality of life.
Immigration is the biggest component of American population growth, and it is the only component which is almost completely within government control. POP.STOP publicizes studies and information about the effects of immigration on American workers and population growth.
POP.STOP major focus on immigration policy is on legislative action. Currently Congress is contemplating substantial increases in immigration, most immediately on increasing admissions of foreign high-tech workers. These congressional decisions are the single most important determinant of the number of immigrants admitted to the United States, thus substantially affecting American population growth |
